The Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives – what they mean for you and your heating system

What are the Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives?

The Ecodesign and Energy Labelling Directives (sometimes referred to as the ErP Directive or Energy Related Products Directive) are laws being implemented across Europe.  The aim of these laws is to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions of Europeans by 2020.

Acting as an umbrella framework, rules for specific products have been published within the framework including rules for heating and hot water appliances, which came into effect on 26 September 2015.

What’s new?

From 26 September, only boilers that meet minimum energy efficiency rating requirements may be purchased and installed. Gas boilers must have an integrated low-energy pump and non-condensing boilers will no longer be available.

Each new boiler will display an energy label, similar to those already seen on other white goods such as fridges and washing machines. Low-rated products will no longer be available.

What will this mean for home owners?

If you have a new boiler installed after 26 September 2015, you will only be offered appliances that meet at least the minimum energy efficiency rating standards. Additionally, if you are buying a combination of products (e.g. boiler + temperature control device) your installer will also provide a ‘package label’ for the efficiency calculation of your complete heating system, based on the different components (boiler, controls, heat pumps etc). If you purchase only a new boiler and the remainder of your existing system remains in place, you will not receive a ‘package label’ but you will still have an energy efficiency rating label on your boiler.
